Botox® Cosmetic

Botulinum toxin injections are biologic toxins that have been refined into therapeutic treatments for frown lines, forehead furrows, crow's feet, fine lines around the mouth, and neck bands. Treatment is administered via tiny needle injections of very low dose BOTOX® Cosmetic directly into the muscles of the face that cause the wrinkles. Knowledge of the anatomy of facial muscles as well as how they interact is paramount, and thus a plastic surgeon (not just a "cosmetic" surgeon) is best qualified to administer the treatments.

There is no down time. Aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, and Vitamin E. should be avoided prior to use because of the increased risk of bruising and bleeding. Possible side effects are usually local in nature, such as local numbness, swelling, and bruising. Temporary headaches and nausea have also been reported. Most complications are temporary, and can be avoided with proper injection technique. A small percentage of patients report no improvement at all. With a longstanding record of safety, BOTOX® injections have become very popular. They are, however, temporary solutions for facial wrinkles, lasting 3 to 4 months on the average. Repeat treatments are thus necessary.
