Laser Resurfacing |
Candidates for CO2 laser resurfacing usually have facial skin that has fine wrinkles or sun damage. The vertical wrinkles around the mouth as well as the "crow's feet" around the eyes are common areas of concern. The fine wrinkles of the upper and lower eyelids in addition to lower eyelid laxity can also be improved. Other conditions that can be improved with laser resurfacing include brown spots, blotchy skin, acne or chicken pox scars, as well as superficial scars from injury. Skin resurfacing with a CO2 laser can be performed at any age.

The effects of CO2 laser resurfacing are similar to those of a deep chemical peel or dermabrasion. The laser, however, removes skin layers by vaporization instead of by chemicals or abrading the skin mechanically. The skin is actually tightened. Dr. Lee is trained in the safe use of lasers. He can control not only the pattern of the laser, but also the amount of energy transmitted to the surface of the skin as well as the depth of penetration. The laser can be used on the entire face of specific areas such as around the mouth or around the eyes.
Although complications are infrequent, infection and abnormal healing can occur. People who are prone to certain skin conditions such as allergic reactions and herpetic outbreaks are at risk for eruptions. An anti-viral medication is usually prescribed before treatment. Subtle color changes and blotchiness can also occur. Patients are strongly encouraged to protect their skin from sun exposure. Risks can be minimized and results prolonged by following certain instructions that will be given before and after surgery.
After the treatment, your resurfaced skin will be covered with a protective barrier ointment or cream. Occasionally, bandages or dressings may be applied. Recommendations about skin cleansers and applications will be provided. For men, shaving will have to be avoided during the initial period. After seven to ten days, when your face stops "weeping," new skin begins to form. At this time, camouflage makeup can be used. After the initial redness regresses, your skin may stay pink for weeks to several months. You can generally return to work within a week or two. Exercise and strenuous activity should be avoided for a few more weeks.
Despite all of our efforts, the skin continues to age. Depending on the depth and extent of the laser treatment, as well as the location, some wrinkles will return sooner than others. Generally, the improvement of the quality and texture of your skin will usually last for many years to come.
